Catalonia - The Baix Emporda and Resorts
Situated in the north east of Spain, Catalonia is undoubtedly Spain’s most beautiful province, it has a wild and rugged coastline, majestic mountains and boasts Spain’s second city, Barcelona as its capital. Catalan culture and history are very different to the rest of Spain and the Catalan language, suppressed in the Franco era, is now spoken widely throughout the province. Catalonia Walks are based in Northern Catalonia in the Baix Emporda region, where the coast the “Costa Brava” is at its wildest and most beautiful. However, the Baix Emporda has much more to offer than a spectacular coastline.
It is a land of ancient hill villages, many lovingly restored and continuing to be thriving and living communities. The plains of the Baix Emporda offer Spain’s richest agricultural lands and are famed for the wide variety of fruits, vegetables and grains including the famous rice fields of Pals. To visit the Baix Emporda in springtime is a joy to behold, stunning wild flowers, poppy fields and blossoms. Surrounding the plains of the Baix Emporda are ancient mountains and hills. To the South are the heavily forested Gavarres mountains with hundreds of miles of medieval trails and treks while further north a visit to the Quermany Gros and Castel Montgri mountains offer wonderful panoramic views of the entire region. All of these contrasting features of the Baix Emporda are to be found in an astonishingly compact area - all our walks are either directly commencing/ending from our resorts or at the most a 20 minute or so drive.
